The growing popularity of Japan’s various sights brings with it swarming crowds. The best remedy is to get up at the crack of dawn.

We were among the first to arrive at Fushimi Inari Shrine around 6am, and it’s a good thing we did. We had the ~1-2 hour hike up Mount Inari largely to ourselves. On our own, we could feel the weight of the thousands of blood orange torii gates enclosing the path.

Despite the torii seeming to repeat endlessly, each bend in the trail revealed its own surprise—new angles of light, shifts in elevation, and subtly different arrangements of gates that turned every stretch of the path into its own distinct passage.
